Meru
Meru National Park is a green and lush park with 13 rivers and springs running through and a thus a great contrast to dry savannah of Kenya's other parks. It is beautiful here with an impressive variety of vegetation, landscape and wildlife species as well as stunning views of Mount Kenya. Of course, Meru is most famous for George & Joy Adamson who lived here and where they released Elsa into the wild - leaving many of us dreaming of Africa.
You will see plenty of big game here and not much else. Being off the beaten track there are few tourists in Meru. The Park is renound for large herds of elephant and incorporates a 44km2 rhino sanctuary, home to over 40 white rhino and 20 black rhino. You will also see buffalo, eland, kudu, gazelle and plenty of other buck, giraffe and zebra. Expect to see baboons, hyena, jackal, large prides of lion (possibly Elsa's decendents!), mongoose, Vervet monkeys and warthog. The rivers abound with hippo and crocodile and fishing is permitted at camp sites and along the Tana River. There is also a large variety of birdlife to keep the twitchers twitching.
Elsa's Kopje is the obvious and most fantastic place to stay but we would also recommend Rhino River Camp as a very cool alternative.
